Suburb of Chicago | Hinsdale, IL

Scope of work: Full renovation and décor
Square feet: Approx. 4,500
Clients: A family of five
Better, not more, was the mandate for this project in a leafy suburb of Chicago. Determined to
live in an old house with its attendant classic details, our clients purchased an elegant 1930s brick home and the adjacent lot. Guided by the concept of a multi-structure English estate, we proposed a pool and pool house-guest house next door — adding square footage and function without unnecessarily supersizing the main home.

Free from the pressure to inflate storage or reinvent the floor plan, we channeled our energy into revealing, reinstating, and celebrating the historic home’s intrinsic integrity and grace. Older homes arrive with quirks, and here even the challenging spaces received thoughtful solutions: an under-utilized library became an efficient and handsome mudroom, and a forgotten attic was transformed into a striking home office and lounge.

Furnishings find a balance of comfort and distinction, with exciting pairings such as midcentury Warren Platner chairs in easy view of a 19th century commode, clever juxtapositions that further energize and uplift this joyful family home.
